A Celebration of the Art and Life
Sunday,
February 7, 2016 at 2 pm
Join us in a presentation of a celebration of the art and life of the great
Finnish Painter, Akseli Gallen-Kallela, who was born in 1865, the same year as
Jean Sibelius and another great Finnish artist, Pekka Halonen.
Bob Poutt and
his son Ron, an artist himself, will explore Gallen-Kallela’s upbringing and
training as an artist, his marriage and the loss of a young daughter, his travels
and the homes that he designed and built for himself, and the importance of these
in the development of his art.
Gallen-Kallela’s
output was prolific; slides will be shown representing the artist’s portrayal of ordinary Finnish
country people, the Finnish wilderness and, especially, the Kalevala. Ron will describe the evolution of
Gallen-Kallela’s artistic style, its relationship to the prevailing European
artistic movements and how, in recent years, his art has come to the notice of
serious collectors outside of Finland.
The Runeberg Chorus will
also be performing.
