Jörn Donner’s film is based on the true story of Kerttu Nuorteva (Minna Haapkylä), an American-born Finn raised in Soviet Karelia . She operated as a Russian spy in Finland before being caught and arrested in 1942.
This dramatic, thriller-like film is about her interrogations by three officers (Marcus Groth, Hannu-Pekka Björkman, Lauri Nurkse). Kerttu remained silent for months until she was persuaded of Stalin’s cruelty and betrayal of communist ideals. Her ideology shattered, she confessed. Kerttu was sentenced to death, but was saved by the ending of the war.
