Canadian Friends of Finland
welcomes you to a talk about
The Finnish Language
Sunday, April 22, 2012 at 2 pm
Did you know that the word "Ă„iti" is not of Finnish origin, but that it is a borrowed word? But from where was it borrowed, and when?
Aija Elg will discuss (in English) loan words in Finnish and the relationship of Finnish to other languages. The talk will explore the roots of the Finnish language and what Finnish words tell us about the history of the Finns and the people they have met.
Aija will also look at new words being adopted into Finnish today and asks whether Finnish should be "protected" from the influence of other languages.
Aija Elg is the Visiting Lecturer of Finnish Language and Culture at the University of Washington.
