Under the Red Star (2011)

Introduced by the Director Kelly Saxberg
(who also directed the documentary, Letters from Karelia)

Under the Red Star is a fascinating docudrama about the cultural and political ferment centred around Port Arthur's Finnish Labour Temple.

The film chronicles the story of the Finnish immigrants who built Canada's largest labour hall and used it as the centre of their activities. The courage of these newcomers in the face of government and police crackdowns helped shape Canadian labour history.

Under the Red Star melds fictionalized scenes with archival footage and photos to vividly recreate the lives and passions of these early twentieth century activists. The film was shot in Thunder Bay with more than 200 local extras under the direction of Kelly Saxberg.

The Film is in English and Finnish (with English subtitles)

Kelly Saxberg will introduce the film and take questions from the audience afterwards.
